Module 1 – Candide & The Enlightenment

Welcome to your first module!

This one will take you longer than others, because of the extra tasks (reading the Syllabus, filling in the Intro Survey), and because we are dealing with a full text. Modules will generally range between 2 and 3 hours, sometimes less.

Here’s what you need to do this week:

  1. Read the Syllabus and Schedule (main menu). If you have any questions, please let me know!

  2. Please fill out the Intro Survey by the end of this week.

  3. Read from the Anthology
(Volumes 4, 5, and 6 are all in the same pdf, please see page numbers given):
    – In Vol. 4: “Unit 1 – The Age of Reason” (pp. 12-15) and “Voltaire” (pp. 405).
Candide, by Voltaire, 1759 (full text – pp. 406-472) also available here. This is the first of the only two texts we will approach in their entirety. Since it is quite eventful for its size, it might help to get a plot summary like this one.

  4. Watch the lecture below.

  5. Fill out the exit ticket for this lecture so I can count your participation (this is due by the end of each week).

  6. Please go to the Google Doc page (main menu) to choose a module for which you will lead the discussion by writing a 300-word post (or, if you prefer, recording a short video/audio) once during the semester. This is on a first-come-first-served basis. Write your name directly on the Google Doc, under the module of your choice, and mark your calendar!
